HOUSTON, TX, and CARLSBAD, CALIF., October 17, 2011 — Waste Management (NYSE:WM) and 3E Company, a Verisk Analytics company (Nasdaq:VRSK), today announced their new Retail Hazardous Waste Compliance Solutions program, a comprehensive service that goes far beyond back-of-store waste pickups.
The Hazardous Waste Compliance Solutions provide retailers with the critical data, tools, and 24/7 customer service support they need to implement a process-based hazardous waste management program. Simple by design, the program can be executed by employees at every level of operation. It also helps retail employees with on-the-spot decision support, such as determining which products are hazardous wastes and how they should be handled, stored, and labeled for proper disposal. The Universal Product Code–level data provided can also be used to evaluate products and identify ways to minimize waste generation and reduce costs.
The new service was officially launched at the Retail Industry Leadership Association Conference in Orlando, Florida.
The Hazardous Waste Compliance Solutions service, designed by Waste Management and 3E Company and powered by 3E’s product and regulatory databases, contains a wide range of product safety and regulatory compliance data, including classification, transportation, environmental, ecological, and disposal considerations. The databases are continually reviewed and maintained by a team of regulatory analysts to ensure the information reflects the most up-to-date information available, including regulatory changes or ingredient changes from the manufacturer. This data feeds into, and is synchronized with, a specially designed handheld scanning device that allows employees simply to scan products, enter key information, and receive instructions on how to handle the product properly.
“Accurate and comprehensive regulatory data is the cornerstone of environmental stewardship and sustainability initiatives,” said Eric Dixon, vice president of Waste Management’s Sustainability Services. “As regulatory authorities continue to heighten enforcement in the retail sector, it is essential for retailers to implement comprehensive hazardous waste management programs.”
“3E Company and Waste Management have both demonstrated extensive leadership in successfully serving the needs of the retail market,” said Robert S. Christie, president and CEO of 3E Company. “In collaborating with Waste Management, we have developed a solution that enables our retail customers to collect, track, and analyze data about waste reduction performance across the entire organization.”
