PHILADELPHIA, Feb. 27, 2001 — Insurance Services Office, Inc. (ISO) and CAP Index, Inc. today announced that they have renewed their strategic agreement for CAP Index to continue providing its CAPHazard™ crime data for use in ISO's Geographic Underwriting System (GUS®).
"We are pleased to continue using CAP Index's valuable crime data. Since March 1993, our insurance customers have come to rely on this service for objective, reliable crime-exposure information on specific locations in their underwriting and pricing decisions," said Patrick McLaughlin, Senior Vice President of ISO's Risk Decision Services unit.
ISO's Geographic Underwriting System is used by insurers and insurance agents throughout the United States. CAP's crime data are critical in the underwriting, rating, and loss prevention practices of insurers. The GUS crime assessment service, based on CAP Index crime data, evaluates the risk potential for personal and property crime at specific locations anywhere in the United States. CAP Index compiles crime information from the FBI, national victim surveys, and corporate loss reports from individual businesses. Insurers simply enter a specific address into ISO's GUS, and get back a ranking — on a 1-to-10 scale — of the location's exposure to crime, as compared with the national average.
The GUS crime service also includes separate rankings for aggregate crimes against persons and aggregate crimes against property. Quantified crime data is one criterion used to determine appropriate levels and rates of insurance coverage. Insurers also use crime information to recommend security initiatives.
Robert Figlio, CAP Index Chairman and CEO said: "ISO's offering of CAP Index crime vulnerability data is an ideal example of how the insurance industry uses quality data to make underwriting decisions. Managing risks becomes a rational business process once the risk is quantified. CAP's corporate clients use our data in much the same way. Once they're able to recognize their risks, they're better able to create an appropriate plan to mitigate them."
